Lancaster v Ju88 - painting 1
Oil on Stretched Canvas 24” x 16”
This was a joint commission from two brothers, whose father flew in Lancasters. The two paintings portray the same scene a few moments apart, as the Lancaster continues in an arc to shake off the nightfighter.
During a night raid on Nuremberg, 16th March 1945, Lancasters of bomber command were met with intense fighter opposition. Lancaster UL-M2 of 576 Sqn was intercepted over the target area by a Ju-88 nightfighter. The Lancaster pilot corkscrewed his aircraft to shake off the enemy. The rear gunners firing mechanism failed but he was able to fire one gun manually. These actions were enough to deter the nightfighter pilot who broke off his attack and climbed away. Sadly 3 of the 14 aircraft from 576 Sqn did not return from the mission.
