The Commission
On the evening of 20th September, 1918, Handley Page O/400 C9732, crewed by pilot 2/Lt A.C.G. Fowler, Observer 2/Lt C.C. Eaves and Gunlayer 2/Lt J.S. Ferguson undertook a low level bombing mission on the enemy aerodrome at Frescaty, in the Moselle region of Lorraine, then in Germany. It was the pilot’s twenty-first mission and each of his crew's first. Sadly it was to be their last.
This painting 'In Roaring They Shall Rise' was commissioned to commemorate their memory, on the 100th anniversary of the mission.
The painting was subsequently used to illustrate the cover of a book detailing the service life of 2/Lt A.C.G. Fowler
