Bergkönig at Shelsley Walsh
This painting features the famous German racing driver Hans Stuck driving his Auto Union Type-C up Shelsley Walsh hill climb in 1936. Stuck unofficially broke the hill record during Saturday practice, however during the official run the following day the weather turned wet and he finished 5th. Stuck was a successful grand prix driver during the early 1930’s but was also well known for his domination of hill climbing events, which earned him the nickname of ` Bergkönig’ or `King of the Mountains’.
The Type-C has always been one of my favourite cars, especially the hill climb version with its double rear axle, and as I live locally to Shelsley Walsh, I just had to paint the scene!
